Advantages of All-Ceramic Crowns

Picture
As a dentist in Orange County, California, Monica Boniadi, DDS, performs a broad range of dental and cosmetic procedures. Dr. Monica Boniadi has provided many patients with crowns.

Whatever its material composition, a crown can serve as a stand-alone treatment or as a supplement to other treatments to protect damaged or weakened teeth. Patients with root canals often receive a temporary crown to protect the newly fragile tooth, while those receiving implants or bridges require a crown to serve as an artificial tooth.

Some crowns are partially or fully composed of gold or other metals, although patients seeking the most aesthetically pleasing option often gravitate toward ceramic, since it looks very natural. Whether all-ceramic or porcelain-fused-to-metal, a ceramic crown gathers and reflects light the same way that a natural tooth's enamel does. With no underlying metal layer to interrupt this play of light, the all-ceramic crown, whether composed of porcelain or another ceramic, blends in more effectively with natural teeth.

All-ceramic crowns also offer the advantage of being more biocompatible and less abrasive to surrounding teeth, as compared to porcelain-fused-to-metal options. This means not only less irritation, but a lower risk of allergic reaction or sensitivity.

Advantages of Dental Implants

As a privately practicing dentist in Orange County, California, Monica Boniadi, DDS, uses laser and traditional techniques to offer a broad range of procedures. Dr. Monica Boniadi draws on particular experience with implant dentistry and other cosmetic procedures.

Patients with missing teeth have a number of options for their replacement. One of the most reliable and long-lasting is the dental implant, which uses a titanium post to attach the replacement tooth permanently to the jaw bone. Once the dentist places the implant, the bone grows around the post, which offers additional stability.

Because they are securely attached to the jaw, dental implants function like a patient's own teeth. They allow the patient to speak, bite, and chew with confidence, as compared to temporary dentures that can slip and slide along the gum tissue. The permanence of dental implants means that they can last throughout the patient's lifetime given the proper care.

Additionally, because dental implants insert into the bone where the root of the natural tooth existed, they provide structural support to the jaw. Missing teeth can cause other teeth within the mouth to shift, which can lead to orthodontic issues, and dental implants prevent this from occurring. And because the jaw provides full support to the implant, the solution does not require reducing the enamel on other teeth, as is required to replace a tooth using a bridge.

Uses and Benefits of Dental Lasers

Monica Boniadi, DDS, has practiced dentistry in Orange County, California, for more than 20 years. Focused particularly on cosmetic care, Dr. Monica Boniadi incorporates dental laser technology into many of the procedures that she performs.

Dental lasers have been in common use in the dental profession for nearly 25 years. Hard tissue lasers, which cut precisely through tooth and bone, offer additional options for treating sensitivity, detecting and removing decay, and preparing teeth for fillings. Soft tissue lasers, meanwhile, can be useful in the reshaping of gum tissue and removing soft tissue growths for biopsy or denture fitting.

Because soft tissue lasers seal blood vessels and nerve endings at the same time as they penetrate tissue, they may reduce bleeding and swelling while simultaneously reducing or even eliminating post-operative pain. In some cases, lasers reduce the discomfort of the procedure itself to the level that the patient may not require anesthesia.

When used in decay removal, lasers can better preserve healthy tooth structure. However, because of the limitations of the technology, they cannot be used on cavities between teeth, around old or existing fillings, or on teeth that will need a crown due to the extent of the filling.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Picture
Dr. Monica Boniadi has practiced dentistry at the Laser & Cosmetic Dental Institute of Orange County in California since 2000. She earned her doctorate of dental surgery (DDS) from the UCLA School of Dentistry in Los Angeles. In addition to general dentistry services, Dr. Monica Boniadi performs cosmetic procedures, such as applying porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns, and implants.

Occasionally, tooth loss due to injury, disease, or decay causes functional or aesthetic problems. In these cases, dental implants can replace the root of a tooth and restore function. Most commonly made of titanium and titanium alloys, dental implants achieve a higher success rate than any other implanted surgical device.

To place a dental implant, the dental surgeon creates channels in the jawbone and inserts the implants in the site. Over the course of several months, the implants fuse to the bone, at which point a tooth restoration can be attached. Just like natural teeth, dental implants require daily brushing and flossing, as well as regular visits to a dentist.

Caring for a Porcelain Crown

For about 22 years, Monica Boniadi, DDS, has provided dental services to patients at her private practice in Orange County, California. As a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Monica Boniadi offers a number of restorative procedures, including dental crowns.

Porcelain crowns are a wonderful way of restoring damaged teeth and getting back a great-looking smile. When patients get a crown for the first time, they typically wonder if crowns require any special care. In general, caring for a crown is the same as caring for a normal tooth. Everyday brushing and flossing of the crown, just like a tooth, are the best way to prevent bacteria from causing problems around the crowned tooth's root. Regular dental checkups are recommended as well, at least once every six months.

Avoid using the crowned tooth (or any natural teeth, for that matter) when trying to open things. The resulting pressure, over the long term, can cause damage to the crown. Likewise, do not bite fingernails, or chew ice or hard candy. The goal is to keep as much pressure off the crown as possible to ensure it remains seated properly and structurally sound.for more information, or to schedule an appointment please call (949)448-7500.

Benefits of Invisalign Braces

With more than two decades of experience in her chosen field, Monica Boniadi, DDS, owns and operates a dental practice in Laguna Hills, California. At her practice, Dr. Monica Boniadi offers a number of procedures, including Invisalign braces.

There are a number of factors to consider when selecting what type of braces to use to straighten one’s smile. Affordability, effectiveness, and looks all factor into the decision. When comparing options, however, Invisalign braces offer noteworthy benefits.

Compared to metal braces, Invisalign offers are more appealing looking - in fact, they are mostly unnoticeable. This makes them a better choice for those who are concerned about appearances and want to avoid the look of metal braces.

Additionally, Invisalign braces are more comfortable than traditional braces. This is because they are not permanently affixed to the teeth. Rather, they can be removed during meals or when drinking beverages.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact our office (949)448-7500

Finally, Invisalign braces are markedly safer for the surrounding tooth and gum tissue than traditional metal braces are. Invisalign braces are smooth and made of a much gentler material. This means that the gums won’t be as susceptible to puncture or other injuries.

Periodontitis and Gingivitis - The Two Main Types of Gum Disease

1/13/2017

Picture
Dr. Monica Boniadi graduated from University of California, Los Angeles with her DDS and has been practicing dentistry in the state for more than two decades. An award-winning professional, Monica Boniadi, DDS, is the owner and dentist at the Laser & Cosmetic Dental Institute of Orange County and provides such services as porcelain fillings, root canals, and treatment for gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gum disease is a serious ailment that can result in the loss of bone around the teeth and, if untreated, the loss of the teeth themselves. There are two main types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the most mild form of gum disease. It occurs when tartar and plaque are left on the teeth for too long due to poor oral hygiene. Bacteria from the tartar and plaque cause the gums to become red and swollen and prone to bleeding. Generally less severe, gingivitis does not cause any tissue or bone loss and it can be treated with regular brushing, flossing, and cleanings at the dentist.

Periodontitis is more serious and is occurs when gingivitis is left untreated. Over time, the plaque grows below the gum line, and the body begins breaking down tissue and bone around the teeth in as a part of its natural chronic inflammatory response to the toxins. The gums begin pulling away from the teeth, leaving open spaces that often become infected; if untreated, teeth normally must be removed.
